Within the exhibition, Andrea's work is part of the subsection "Dissecting the Past: Myths and Memories." She draws upon personal childhood memories from Transylvania, family lore and legend, cultural mythologies, and the subconscious for inspiration. It's a rich subject for Andrea: the 2007 exhibition Pricked: Extreme Embroidery featured a very cool set of fabric swatches embroidered with Transylvanian folk wisdom passed down from her own Mother. image courtesy: http://a.parsons.edu/~dezsoa/DRAWING_embroidered.html

the full set of tunnel books

Andrea shares two alternatives to her tunnel books @ Parsons New School for Design: the first is the more traditional accordion style and the other is a simpler, wrap-around format. In the latter, each individual "screen," or portion, of the tunnel book has side tabs that are are affixed to a long strip of the same material. The strip "wraps" around the sides and back of the book. image courtesy: http://a.parsons.edu/~dezsoa/BOOKS_Tunnel1.html

Transylvanian artist Andrea Dezsö work is always engaging but often quite dark and foreboding. Like the best kind of fairy tale, when looking at her pieces you often feel like the big bad wolf might be lurking around the next corner, ready to jump out and eat you. Her series of cut paper stage pieces created for the exhibition Slash: Paper Under the Knife is no exception.
