Visitors can see conservators at work in five different laboratories and studios at the Lunder Conservation Center. The Center features floor-to-ceiling glass walls that allow the public to view all aspects of conservation work— work that is traditionally done behind the scenes at other museums and conservation centers. The center is located in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The Lunder Conservation Center keeps in touch with the public through Twitter and Facebook. The public can follow the center's tweets to know what conservators are working on in the labs.
Art conservators need to have a master's degree in conservation or a related field. They must have a background in chemistry, archaeology or studio art, and art history. Such an education gives them the ability to manage, care for, preserve, treat, and document works of art.
Thomas Hart Benton lived from 1889 to 1975. The Self-Portrait with Rita, painted the year the artist and his wife, Rita Piacenza Benton, were married, depicts the couple on South Beach, Martha's Vineyard.
