The ceiling was commissioned by Pope Julius II, perhaps the most important patron of the High Renaissance, who was also known as the "Warrior Pope" for his military exploits. He also commissioned Michelangelo to sculpt his tomb, an ambitious project that remained unfinished for decades.

Smarthistory correspondents in the virtual world of Second Life visit the recreation of the Sistine Chapel on Vassar's campus there and talk about Michelangelo's ceiling. And of course, because it's a virtual version of the chapel, they can fly up to the ceiling and see it up close!

Speakers: Dr. Beth Harris (Max Newbold), Dr. Steven Zucker (Sez Zabelin)

This series of videos is so amazing and professionally done. Not only is it informative and educational, it is fun to watch. Dr. Harris and Dr. Zucker are such dynamic speakers.

I will tell all my friends about this website.

correction: ....remain blessed.

I was in St. Peter's Basilica disappointed about not being able to see the Sistine Chapel as an art student in 2002. However, I got to see and was blessed by Pope John Paul II. So this is a nice way to "see" the chapel finally and remained blessed!
