brief bio
0:00:00
Judith Schaechter has been working in stained glass for more than 20 years. Despite the fact (or perhaps because of the fact) that stained glass is generally a medium with traditional subjects, Judith's work is often bizarre, with more in common with Tim Burton than Notre Dame. where to get glass supplies

This site offers a nice assortment of flash glass and supplies for the aspiring glass artist. (photo: Delphi, http://www.delphiglass.com/index.cfm?page=itemView&itemsysid=191462 NOTE: This site is not affiliated in any way with Judith or the Museum of Arts and Design.)

various types of stencils

Speaking of 'various types of stencils,' this piece from MAD's collection actually comes from a Dover design book featuring hundreds of old advertizements for children's toys. Look for the train of animals on wheels in the middle of the piece in particular. (photo: Dominic Episcopo)

who are those people in the background?

You probably noticed the people walking by and peering in. This video was actually shot in the Open Studios at MAD. Our three working studios on the 6th floor give the public a chance to interact with artists as they work, and we have at least one artist working every day that the museum is open. They may be a little fishbowl-y, but it's definitely one of the coolest features about our new building.

layering example

This piece is awesome. Entitled Seeing Is Believing, it was installed in one of the stairwells at MAD in the fall of 2008. It's huge (about 9' x 10'), and composed of thousands of layered pieces. Click through the link to see a video of Judith describing the project (teaser: making stained glass that has to fit into existing architecture is pretty tricky). (photo: Matthew Cox)

Judith Schaechter is a contemporary artist working in stained glass, and like many of the artists in MAD's permanent collection, her work bridges the gap between craft and art. Without a thorough understanding of the craft of cold glass work, an understanding founded in the work of craftspeople from hundreds of years ago, she could not create her own fine art pieces.

While Judith's work may be technically grounded in tradition, the subject matters of her pieces can be anything but. The Patron Saint of the Circus Apes Day Parade from MAD's collection is a great example: whimsical, bizarre, and maybe a little creepy, it's also beautifully executed. Other pieces, like the installation Seeing Is Believing, are more closely related to what most people think of when they think of stained glass.
