Channels: Contemporary Art

In May 2009 Gallery Crawl interviewed five graduate students receiving Masters of Fine Arts degrees from Mills College in Oakland, California. All experiment with multiple mediums including sculpture, drawing, fiber arts, painting, and new media. In their thesis exhibition, collectively titled Young Americans, each student presented a body of work completed during the two-year MFA program.

Located in East Oakland, Mills College's campus is an oasis of trees and Julia Morgan-designed architecture. Twelve graduate students are accepted to the program each year. Graduate thesis exhibitions are displayed at the Mills College Art Museum each spring.

Art can mean many different things, and these talented artist revealed meanings that even i would not think of. The art in this video is amazing. It opens your eyes to a whole new thought process.
Firstly, by new thought process i mean that when the artists explains to the viewer why he or she did what they did you look at their art again in another perspective. For example, Annie Vought, she saves or buys old letters to reflect and pay homage to the people who wrote the letters. Annie belives that people accidentally reveal themselvs in letters. She also talks about how people don't really use personal letters anymore. Almost everyone uses emails.
Some may argue that her art has no meaning at all. If that were the case why would she use personal letters? She reveals that she views some of her letters as her own personal ghosts.
Next, Ms. Ester Traugot uses Crochet to express her love for nature. she crochets rocks, branches, and many other items from nature. She Belives that she is just revealing what is already there. Using the crochet to represent natures loving and Nurturing side.
Some may say that her work shows no depth at all. Esther's work has many different levels of depth. The crochet for example, even when it is not on a piece of nature it keeps whatever it is on warm, it nurtures its occupant, as does Nature.
In conclusion, the work of these artist is amazing. It is the kind of art that speaks to you.

What a joy to see these young artists, their work and the commentary.
