Visit the Clowes Italian Gallery and watch as an IMA conservator works to restore Jacopo Zucchi’s 16th century Portrait of a Lady (attributed). This oil on canvas painting suffered numerous damages in the past, and although previously restored on several occasions, the painting has remained unsuitable for display due to its condition. The painting was moved out of storage and brought to the Conservation Lab at the IMA, where it underwent analysis and treatment with the chief goal of restoring it to an exhibitable state. The varnish and original restorer’s paint was painstakingly removed, and it is now in its final stage of treatment. Visitors can stop in and watch as Clowes Conservator of Paintings Fiona Beckett retouches this Italian Renaissance painting in order to return it to its former glory.
