Indianapolis Museum of Art's Star Studio featured works by Robert J. Lang, a former physicist and engineer turned artist, whose innovative approach to the traditional art of Origami has earned him a reputation as one of the world's most important Origami artists.
I started folding at the age of about six.
After awhile, I began to try to come up with my own folds. I'd figure out, what are the essential characteristics of the subject?
What are the parts that need to be conveyed? This is still a square and that conflict of perception between
your eyes are telling you it's a heron, or something else, your brain knows this is still a square of paper; you could unfold this and it's still a square.
That conflict of perception, between what it is and what it appears to be, continues to be, for me, the charm and appeal of origami, and
I hope it is to our audience, as well.
SWEETNESS! that was the coolest thing!!!!

I was lucky enough to see Lang work on one of the cranes that he hung in the Star Studio. I was awestruck, learned a lot, and realized that exquisitely engineered paper creations can express a transcendent artistic intention. I also realized that I would never want to make a lobster out of folded paper; I'll leave that to the professionals. :)
Love the music.
