Ian Fraser, former longtime curator of the IMA’s Clowes Collection,
returned to Indianapolis to discuss his lifelong love affair with collecting
decorative arts and, in particular, British silver. Fraser tells the story of
his own origins as a collector, the process of discovering the treasures made
by 17th and 18th-century English silversmiths, and his passion for collecting
fine pieces made by female artisans. Fraser and his partner, Ambrose Smith,
recently donated some two dozen pieces of extraordinary silver from their
collection to the IMA, which will be displayed in the newly renovated
European decorative arts gallery.
