Artist Ala Younis, who describes herself as a research-based artist, describes how the discovery of Rifat Chadirji’s slides of a gymnasium named after Saddam Hussein and designed by Le Corbusier inspired her work, Plan for Greater Baghdad. The title of her work relates to Frank Lloyd Wright’s proposal for an opera house in Baghdad that was never built. Younis describes how the documents she gathered during research formed into three layers of a timeline, and its relationship to the models of the gymnasium and male figures who are frozen in moments of “performing power.”
