More than 200 treasures were on view, including gold and jade, paintings and porcelains, from China’s greatest museums, many never before seen outside of China. The works illustrated how this ancient dynasty surpassed the technology of its time to become a global leader in maritime power, mass production and artistic accomplishment.

00:00:03 So the eighteen academicians served the Tang court in the 7th century. It was Tang Dynasty that really restored

00:00:13 the imperial unity under a very efficient government, run by a group of very talented,

00:00:21 high educated people. So Tang Dynasty was the Chinese Renaissance and the emperor Taizong was the

00:00:31 key figure in that picture. So Taizong found and sponsored Academy of Literature in his palace

00:00:40 so he chose eighteen from his officials to serve the Academy of Literature twenty-four hours a day.

00:00:51 So those eighteen scholars were given very high privilege of living inside the palace, good food,

00:00:59 handsome payment and honored titles and such other things, so we know that the writing and the poetry

00:01:09 were read by every scholar and the Academy of Literature was a place where everybody wanted to get in, so Du Jin himself

00:01:18 failed many times at state examination, so finally he gave up his hope to serve the court.

00:01:28 So he transplanted his ambitions into being an artist, he always saw the subject related to the court.
