The work of Eric Hilton is inspired by the dramatic and windswept landscapes
of northern Scotland, where he lives part of the year, but his sculptures
explore the landscape of the imagination. A designer for Steuben Glass for
over 35 years, Hilton understands highly refractive lead glass and he uses it
to its full potential. Hilton’s crystal landscapes have dreamlike
topographical features that are meticulously engraved, cut, and sandblasted
in the glass. When the components of his landscapes are assembled, the
optical refraction of the glass makes it appear as if the interior structures
have grown inside the sculpture. This video was featured in the exhibition,
Voices of Contemporary Glass: The Heineman Collection, on view at The Corning
Museum of Glass, May 16, 2009– January 3, 2011.
