Many early curiosity cabinets organized their contents into three familiar "kingdoms"- animal, vegetable and, mineral. These categories helped collectors bring some order to the natural world, which still held wondrous and unexplained mysteries.
Loca Miraculi presents these natural kingdoms in three distinct assemblages that imaginatively combine earthly artifacts with awe-inspiring achievements of the human hand. This juxtaposition highlights another set of categories common in historic cabinets: naturalia vs. artificialia.
Loca Miraculi is an exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
