Exclusive Episode #139: Cindy Sherman reveals how dressing up in character began as a kind of performance and evolved into her earliest photographic series such as "Bus Riders" (1976), "Untitled Film Stills" (1977-1980), and the untitled rear screen projections (1980).

In self-reflexive photographs and films, Cindy Sherman invents myriad guises, metamorphosing from Hollywood starlet to clown to society matron. Often with the simplest of means—a camera, a wig, makeup, an outfit—Sherman fashions ambiguous but memorable characters that suggest complex lives lived out of frame. Shermans investigations have a compelling relationship to public images, from kitsch (film stills and centerfolds) to art history (Old Masters and Surrealism) to green-screen technology and the latest advances in digital photography.

I "think" I ran into Cindy Sherman a few times in Manhattan, but....I'm not sure. She is, of course, attractive, but not in a glamorous way. I hate to say it, but she could be rather "forgettable". That is her blessing in what she does: to be "anyone". As a photographer myself, I have always admired, even loved, her work. The scale is always astounding. Beautifully printed and framed. Many other artists have used their own image for their work, especially Marcel Duchamp and his Rrose Salavy, but that was only an occasional thing, not their whole working premise. This is what makes Cindy Sherman so completely original. I would like to see what she would do making an entire movie, with her playing all the parts!
She's amazing !
