Julian Hoeber's Demon Hill

Julian Hoeber's Demon Hill

Los Angeles-based artist Julian Hoeber uses a wide range of media---including sculpture, drawing, filmmaking, installation, and photography---to explore psychology, emotion and narrative. For this exhibition, Hoeber presents Demon Hill, a freestanding structure based on the architecture of "gravitational mystery spots." The architecture of these shacks creates the illusion that gravity works at an angle, that water runs uphill, and that bodies stand at a sharp angle to the floor.

YBCA Big Idea // Encounter

YBCA Big Idea // Encounter

ENCOUNTER: ENGAGING THE SOCIAL CONTEXT — Contemporary artists that come to YBCA are very often deeply engaged with the social context. They are interested in exposing and challenging some of the inequities that exist in the contemporary world and making us think more deeply about issues of social justice, creating change and striving for a better world. Often, they want to provoke us to some sort of change in behavior or action. But their work almost always involves a confrontation, or an encounter, with reality and even truth.

Balinese Temple Offerings

Balinese Temple Offerings

The painting of the temple offering at the start of this video, on view at the Asian Art Museum during the Bali exhibition, is by Miguel Covarrubias. It is among the many offerings he must have seen as he traveled around the island of Bali. Offerings such as these are still an important part of ceremonial life in Bali to this day. Miguel Covarrubias, a Mexican artist famous in 1920s and 30s New York City for illustrating the covers of magazines like Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, made his first trip to Bali in 1930 with his wife Rose.
