The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College is a uniquely interdisciplinary museum focusing largely on contemporary art. In addition to originating significant traveling exhibitions featuring established artists of our time, the museum also champions and publishes the work of emerging and under-recognized artists from the last fifty years through its “Opener” series and retrospective exhibitions.

Venturing outside contemporary art, the Tang plays a creative and catalytic role in pedagogy and learning on campus through the use of objects and exhibitions to explore topics in the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. In calling itself a “teaching museum,” the Tang emphasizes its roles as a laboratory and classroom over its additional functions as a presentation venue and collection. The Tang staff works closely with Skidmore faculty to co-curate exhibitions, organize events, and create assignments that encourage exploration and discovery in the gallery and classroom.

Outside of the classroom, the Tang encourages student participation with the museum through internships, work-study experiences and a Thursday night events series organized and run by students.
